I have a real soft spot for Mexican desserts. They’re the kind of comfort food that feels familiar but somehow better, with cinnamon, creaminess, and just the right level of sweetness.
I’ve gathered 6 recipes that are all over the map: some fluffy and coffee ready, others crispy, sugary, and downright irresistible. Whether you’re new to Mexican cuisine or just craving a lazy weekend treat, these are the ones I think you should bother making.
1. Arroz Con Leche
When the temperature drops, I’m all about a warm bowl of arroz con leche. And when summer rolls around?
I just chill it for picnics and lazy evenings outside. It’s a creamy rice pudding laced with cinnamon and vanilla, and honestly, you deserve a big spoonful this week.
2. Conchas
Conchas are one of those iconic Mexican treats I turn to again and again. They’re pillowy soft, just sweet enough, and honestly perfect with a morning cup of coffee or as a little after dinner something. The dough does need a good rest, but if you can wait, this recipe is so worth it.
3. Buñelos
Buñelos are these wafer thin, shatteringly crisp rounds of fried dough that get showered in cinnamon sugar. They might just be the very top of my personal Mexican sweets list.
I eat them all year long, no holiday required, but if you do make them for Christmas, they fit right in. For the real deal, try the piloncillo syrup: it’s just four ingredients, not counting water, and it turns every bite into something magical.
4. Flan
Mexican flan has a silkiness that I can’t get over. It’s one of my all time favorite postres Mexicanos, with a deep caramel flavor and a delicate wobbly texture that makes it impossible to stop at one bite. I think it would be a showstopper at a dinner party, but I’ve also happily made a whole batch just for me.
5. Tres Leches Cake
Tres leches cake is a whole experience for anyone with a serious sweet tooth. It’s an impossibly moist cake soaked in three milks until every bite is luscious and cool.
I love that it makes even a casual hangout feel a little fancy, but you absolutely don’t need a reason to whip one up. Just make it and enjoy.
6. Churros
I am completely in love with churros. That crackly, sugar coated outside gives way to a soft, steamy center that’s just so satisfying. I’ve dunked them in chocolate and dulce de leche, and honestly, dulce de leche has my heart forever.
